Open embedded Excel object error: The server application, source file, or item cannot be found

A user, recently upgraded from Office 2013 to 365, received an error dialogue when trying to edit an embedded Excel object in a Word document. This process worked flawlessly prior to the upgrade, the file had not been changed since and continued to work fine on other machines. The obvious attempts to fix, including an online repair of Office and installation of latest updates, made no difference.

It appeared to me that it was the Excel component that was amiss as right-clicking on the embedded object would normally give options of Object | Open, Edit, or Convert, in this instance the only option was Object | Convert, and this showed the embedded item as being (as far as Word was concerned) of Unknown type.

Checking the registry led to the resolution of the problem: Under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT the .xlsx key default value was referencing xlsx_auto_file, this is incorrect, on other working machines it shows Excel.Sheet.12 – edited the entry on the recalcitrant machine accordingly, opened the document/table again, and all was good!
